BUSTER FENTON

KATHY FENTON

In 1989, Buster Fenton, a dedicated long haul trucker decided to hang up his keys and move onto the next stage in life. At age 52 he along with his 16-year-old daughter, Kathy, shared a deep passion for horses and horse people alike. They longed to turn the 80-acre homestead, which had been in the family since 1907, into a place to train and board horses. Long time family friends helped where they could and were instrumental in establishing the horse-training end of Buster and Kathy’s dream. The horse-boarding end was slower starting as a result of several warnings from neighbors and friends. The well meaning cautions were of people taking over the place, dogs running wild, and intoxicated people hanging around all hours of the day and night.

Running an advert in the Calgary Bargain Finder simply stating “Horses wanted sour or sweet” started the training end. This is not something I would recommend for the new comers to this industry, I could tell you that more sour horses show up then you ever see sweet horses. From this we learned valuable techniques in which we still implement into our training program today.

The horse boarding started simply by accident. We felt we needed a bigger place for our young horses to roam while growing up, so we put the word out we wished to rent some land. It was not very long until we met a couple that had just the place we were looking for. After only renting the place for a few short months, the couple left for Africa. They left behind a great gentleman named Jacque Hebert. Learning that the couple had left, Jacques approached us about caring for his 3 horses. He was such a pleasure to deal with we chose to proceed with plan two of our dream. A few ads in the paper and we were off.

One year later, in 1990 we had built 3 paddocks and one round pen. We had 7 horses boarded and had at least two horses per month to train. Our goals were well on their way.

Today we have an outdoor arena, indoor arena, indoor round pen, 25 paddocks, and over 45 boarded horses. Our young stock exceeds 40 head and we have rented an additional 160 acres to accommodate them all.

Unlike our neighbors and friends our experience with boarding horses is a great one. It is build on two strong foundations; trust and family. Each person is trusted and treated like family, which is never been compromised. It is for this reason our standard of accepting boarders continues to be high.

We began with the goal to maintain honesty and quality to the horse industry. We never lost sight of that; the horses are fed high quality tested feed with boarding prices well below the average in our industry. Horses in for training are worked honestly and fairly, the reasonable prices are only charged to time ACTUALLY spent on the horse. Horses sold leave with quality assurance guarantee, offering a replacement option should the horse not work for you.

We are proud of Fenton Quarter Horses & Paints and we hope you enjoy your visit to our website. We hope to have the pleasure of meeting with you in the future.
